Tucked in the countryside and overlooking Swan Lake is a rare gem in Dickinson County -- Little Swan Lake Winery. As a one-of-a-kind establishment in the Lakes area, LSL offers its customers everything from wine produced onsite to a variety of cheese spreads, buffalo meat, wine glasses, clothing and other decor.

"People continue to spend time out here because it's low-key, relaxed and comfortable," said owner Scott Benjamin. "It's informal and gives everyone a chance to get away from their hectic lives."

In the remodeled 1920s barn resides LSL Winery's tasting room, gift shop and dining room complete with a stage on the main floor. The basement is home to the winery itself with well over 20 varieties.

"We have nine new varieties this year," said Benjamin. "The winery just continues to grow."

The Lakes area gem was recently honored at this year's Dallas Morning News Wine Competition with a bronze medal for Little Swan Lake's 2007 American Cabernet Franc.

With an increase in production comes a need for an increase in space, which is exactly why a grain elevator was moved four miles to the winery in March.

When completed, the elevator will house an area for wine barrels on the first floor, a kitchen and restrooms on the second floor, bed-and-breakfast rooms as well as office space on the third and fourth floors and an observation tower with two deck areas on the fifth floor.

"The main idea is still to move another barn in," assured Benjamin. "We gained more room, but now we don't lose space in the barn for the bathroom and kitchen."

Construction on the converted grain elevator continues with hopes of completion by the first of the year.

Little Swan Lake Winery is a family-owned business operated by Scott and Diane Benjamin and family. Nearly every step of the process is done within the tightly-knit group, with Scott as the winemaker, Diane working on selling/marketing, son Joel designing labels and daughter Jennifer helping with bottling and on the farm.

Extend your visit and stay to listed to the talents of one of several entertainers primarily gracing LSL's stage Sunday afternoons. Entertainment is free, but reservations are strongly recommended. A buffalo entree meal is available at all weekend performances with the meat coming from the herd raised on the Benjamins' farm. Australian singer Billie James entertains each Thursday evening from 6-8.
