Funeral services were held May 13 at the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake for Robert L. Currell, 78, of Spirit Lake, who passed away Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake.
Robert was born on Dec. 9, 1930, in Estherville, to Wayne and Marguerite (McKerral) Currell. Bob was united in marriage to Gloria Scott on Oct. 14, 1956, in Estherville.
Bob graduated from Estherville High School in 1948, and went on to further his education, graduating from the University of Iowa in 1952. He attended Drake Law School after serving his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.
In 1955, Bob started working at First Bank and Trust in Spirit Lake, before retiring in November 2007. He served on various committees at the Spirit Lake United Methodist Church and was a member of Rotary, Kiwanis, the Dickinson County Hospital Board, a Winter Games Cheerleader, a Citizen of the Year and Mainsail Parade Grand Marshall. He enjoyed spending his spare time golfing, boating, playing cards, watching western movies, and having coffee at the Roundtable and at Kegler's Kitchen. Bob truly loved his time at Arnolds Park and the Nutty Bar Stand. His favorite activities included anything involving his family, especially watching all of their activities at the Spirit Lake Schools.
Bob is survived by his wife, Gloria of Spirit Lake; two daughters, Deb Ditsworth and her husband Tom of Spirit Lake, and Julie Currell-Smith and her husband Jeff of Okoboji; two sons, Bobby Currell of Sioux City, and Steve Currell and his wife Jo of Spirit Lake; four grandchildren, Courtney Ditsworth, Haley Smith, Ryley Smith and Jackson Currell; and two brothers, James Currell, and his wife, Phyllis, of Spirit Lake, and Richard Currell of Estherville. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Chatfield.
