On Friday, May 1 at approximately 6:20 p.m., Spirit Lake Police stopped a green 1994 Plymouth Voyager on Highway 9 & 71 east of M56 for a traffic violation. After an investigation, it was determined that the driver, Alfred Libby Klein III, 23, of Dunnell, Minn. was intoxicated. Klein was placed under arrest.
A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana. At that time, one of the passengers, John Michael Elbert, 23, of Fairmont, Minn. was also placed under arrest. Klein and Elbert were transported to the Dickinson County Jail to appear before a judge.
Klein was booked on the following charges: OWI - third offense, a class D Felony; possession of a controlled substance - marijuana, a serious misdemeanor; failure to obey a stop or yield sign, a simple misdemeanor; no insurance, a simple misdemeanor; turning from an improper lane, a simple misdemeanor and open container, a simple misdemeanor.
Elbert was booked on possession of a controlled substance - marijuana, a serious misdemeanor.
Simmons, Scott arrested on drug charges
On Friday, May 1 at approximately 9:51 p.m., Spirit Lake Police and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources arrested two male suspects on drug charges. The males, identified as Kevin K. Simmons, 43, of Spirit Lake and Jason Paul Scott, 31, of Estherville, were found to be in possession of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Simmons and Scott were transported to the Dickinson County Jail to be seen before a judge.
Simmons was booked for possession of a controlled substance - marijuana, and aggravated misdemeanor. Scott was booked for possession of a controlled substance - marijuana, second offense, a serious misdemeanor and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.
Meehan arrested for OWI, drugs
On Sunday, May 3 at approximately 1:42 a.m., Spirit Lake Police stopped a 1990 red Oldsmobile for a traffic violation on Erie Avenue and Highway 9 & 71. After an investigation, it was determined the driver, Ryan Richard Meehan, 21, of Estherville, was operating under the influence. A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up a small amount of green leafy substance believed to be marijuana along with drug paraphernalia. Meehan was placed under arrest and transported to the Dickinson County Jail to be seen before a judge.
Meehan was booked on the following charges: possession of a controlled substance - marijuana, a serious misdemeanor; possession of drug paraphernalia - a simple misdemeanor; OWI - first offense, serious misdemeanor; operating with an expired drivers license, a simple misdemeanor; and improper headlighting at night, simple misdemeanor.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.
