From textbooks to MacBooks
(09/01/10)
Spirit Lake Superintendent Dave Smith says the deployment of over 900 computers to district students in grades 5-12 on Tuesday, Aug. 24, was something of a celebration. "We're estimating it was close to 3,000 people in our gym," Smith said. "It was an unbelievable event; it was really more or a celebration in a lot of ways than a deployment. We wanted to make sure we took time to thank everyone, our community, et cetera, that made this all possible, and yes, we deployed the laptops."...

The Spirit Lake football team played for 48 minutes like they had a chip on their shoulder and weren't going to be denied by their larger Class 3A rivals to the south, leading from start to finish in a 25-6 throttling of Spencer at Dale Norton Field Friday, Aug. 27 in Week 1 non-district football play...
Sibley-Ocheyedan shuts out Pioneers in season debut
(09/01/10)
Turnovers and special team miscues played a huge role in a defensive-minded season opener that hinged largely on field position as Okoboji lost the turnover battle and committed two costly mistakes on a pair of botched punts that allowed Sibley-Ocheyedan to pull away for an 18-0 victory in non-district football play in Milford...
G-T uses aerial assault to roll past Rockets
(09/01/10)
Getting some added help from tight end Beau Craig, the Graettinger-Terril football team picked up right where they left off last season, using a balanced offensive attack and overpowering defense to down Remsen-Union 25-13 in non-district play. After finishing as one of the eight best teams at the 8-player ranks in 2009, the Knights built a quick 19-0 cushion on the road when quarterback Eric Hatland tossed three touchdown strikes to Craig in the opening half...

Up north to Wabigoon Lake
(09/01/10)
More and more Americans, particularly our young people, are simply losing touch with the outdoor experience, according to some surveys I have read. An average young person today spends six hours a day in front of a computer or T.V. and less than four minutes playing outdoors. We need parents and grandparents to help swing that percentage around...
Find the food, find the fish
(09/01/10)
From now until ice-up, there is one very basic key to fishing success: You've got to be fishing where the food is. Actually, as soon as the spawn was over finding what the fish wanted to eat was a very important consideration. As the summer progresses and we get into the fall months, staying near what the fish want to eat is very important. Following are some examples and how you can capitalize when you encounter some of these situations...
Rabbit, squirrel hunting season opens Sept. 4
(09/01/10)
The 2010-11 hunting seasons for cottontail rabbits and squirrels (fox and gray) will open on Saturday, Sept. 4. Roadside surveys show cottontail rabbit numbers have generally decreased across the state, but will be similar to last year. "Persistent snow cover this past winter and a wet spring and summer statewide likely reduced the winter survival and reproductive success of cottontails," said Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife research biologist for the DNR. ...
Time well spent: Local volunteers offer free respite to parents, guardians at Time Out Nursery
(09/01/10)
Many busy parents and guardians would agree the moments spent watching their young ones grow up pass far too quickly. They would also likely agree that, sometimes, a little time-out is necessary.
