DNR commission votes down July 4 liquor ban: 'Notice of Intended Action' may allow ban for 2011

A 4-3 vote during the DNR Commissioners meeting held Thursday, May 13 in Des Moines will keep alcohol on the county's public beaches, but those in support of the ban hope public meetings held as early as this July can set into motion a ban for the holiday in 2011.

The Okoboji girls golf team couldn't quite close the gap on the top two squads in the Siouxland Conference, but used a strong second half run to take a stronghold on third place. The Okoboji girls track and field team turned in a banner day, qualifying for state in eight events at the Class 2A district meet Friday, May 14 in Cherokee. "The girls competed very well at the district meet," said Okoboji coach Nate Dau. "Our district is loaded with talent and I knew a lot of wild card relays and individuals would end up qualifying for the state meet."...

The Spirit Lake Park girls track and field team rebounded from a subpar conference meet with an outstanding performance at the Class 3A district meet, claiming nine state bids Friday, May 14 in Le Mars. The Indians placed sixth in a tight team race with 107 points. District champion Storm Lake was just 12 points in front of SLP with 119 points, compared to 107 for the Indians. Le Mars came in second with 116 while MOC-Floyd Valley and Spencer tied for third with 115 points...

Defense loomed large in a Lakes Conference thriller between Spirit Lake Park-Okoboji and Spencer in boys soccer action Monday, May 17 in Lake Park. SLP-O held onto a 2-1 edge for the final 10 minutes of the first half and most of the second half, but couldn't add to its one-goal cushion, which turned out to be detrimental when Tanner Viedenkamp booted the game-tying goal with 3:09 left in regulation. After a disappointing ending to last season, the Okoboji boys golf team made up for it with a runner-up performance at the Class 2A sectional tournament Friday, May 14 at Emerald Hills Golf Course.
