Citizens to elect mayors, councilmembers

Lake Park features one of the most contested races in the Lakes area. Incumbent John L. Engel faces Ken Fiala for the city's mayoral seat. Three council positions are open with six candidates hoping for seats. Incumbents Lance E. Heikens, Richard Packebush and Gary Taber take on Keith Nitzschke, Clark D. Reekers and Gilbert Zahren.
Milford Dynos Robbed

Milford police are seeking a suspect involved in a convenience store robbery last Friday evening.
"The robbery is still under investigation," said Milford Police Chief Vernon Flack. "We're just running down every lead we've got."

Solo flight marks three-generation flight legacy

While most students spend their 16th birthdays nervously gripping the wheel of a terrain-based Honda Accord, Ben Ashland instead experienced the thrill of flight in a 1968 Cessna 127. On Oct. 18, Ashland, a sophomore at Spirit Lake High School, completed his first solo flight, marking an aerial right of passage passed down for three generations.
Arts on Grand to host video festival

Arts on Grand will host a video festival on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. Curtis Dean of Spencer Municipal Utilities will be master of ceremonies. Two videos made during the summer Arts on Grand video camp will be premiered that evening. Eric Meeter, a Dordt College senior majoring in contemporary film and music, led the video camp while working as a summer intern in the SMU Cable video studio. Eric plans to return to Spencer to help with the premiere of two videos made by the video campers.

Funeral services were held recently for Wilma Dodds, 90, who passed away Oct. 16 at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake.
Wilma Dodds was born Aug. 9, 1919 in Swea City, the daughter of Oscar and Mabel (Godfredson) Riddle.

On Monday, Oct. 19, at approximately 11:50 p.m., the Spirit Lake Police Department made a routine traffic stop on a maroon 1987 Pontiac Fiero. The Fiero was driven by 20-year-old Kelly Thompson, Jr. of Spirit Lake, and upon further investigation and search of the vehicle, a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana and drug paraphernalia were located inside the vehicle...

What a wonderful and generous community we live in, the support for the Iowa Lakes Memory Walk and the people that have Alzheimer's in our community and their family was phenomenal. Cornerstone band played music for our event and gave it such an extra special touch, they are a wonderful group and we were so happy to have them share their time and talent. It takes a lot of people and supporters to put together such an event and our community stepped up to the plate to make this happen...
