Habitat House dedications scheduled

The Northwest Iowa Corridor of Habitat For Humanity has scheduled dedications for its two 2009 building projects.
"We are on track to complete both of our houses in one year," said Mary Thunhorst, board member for Habitat for Humanity. "That was our goal, and we're excited that we're going to make that."

For Connie*, it was hard to ignore the signs of trouble in her first abusive relationship.
"One time, I remember, he got off work at 11:00, and I was in bed and I sat up and he just came flying across the bed and punched me in the eye," she remembers. "I was out of work for a week and a half. He just plowed into me so hard. I thought for sure it had popped out of the socket."
Dickinson County farmer reflects on evolution of farming

From the warmth of a heated cab, Lyle Overocker, 76, can look across the fields he farmed as young boy with his dad, and recall long hours in unforgiving fall weather using horse-operated machinery and cabless tractors. Learning the early tools of the trade from his father in the 40s, it would have been nearly impossible for Overocker to accurately predict the technological advances of his profession.

Rev. Tom Van Tassell officiated. Interment was at Milford Cemetery in Milford.

Funeral mass was held Oct. 14 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Milford for Jan Laurie (Fliss) Erdman, 61, of Fostoria, who passed away Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake.
Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Milford.

Rev. Greg Dyk officiated. Interment was at the Union Township Cemetery in Harris.

Natalie and Matthew Clair were married on Sept. 18, 2009 in Estes Park, Colo. at the Della Terra Mountain Chateau.
Natalie is the daughter of Dr. Ron and Jill Kolegraff, owners of re*be Skin and Vein Clinic in Okoboji. Matthew is the son of Troy and Katy Clair, president and CEO of CLAIR Audio in Lititz, Pa.
Stockdale, Synhorst unite in marriage

Rebecca Jean Synhorst and Owen Benton Stockdale were married on Sunday, Sept. 6 at the Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake.
Rebecca is the daughter of Debbie Synhorst of West Des Moines and Dr. John Synhorst of Spirit Lake. Owen is the son of Ned and Joanne Stockdale of Spirit Lake.
Hart celebrates 85th birthday

M. Peter Hart of Wahpeton will celebrate his 85th birthday on Oct. 25, 2009. He was born in Des Moines. In June of 1949, he was married to Isabel Spies at Emmetsburg. Isabel passed away in May 1994. Pete was ordained a deacon at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City in 1986.
Grandfather's time shows happiness through ups and downs

This weekend, my Grandpa Helmers will celebrate his 85th birthday. During our weekly Sunday dinner this past week, my grandma turned to him and said, "So, you're going to be 85. How do you feel?" He pondered this for a moment before answering. "Last night, not so good. But today, I feel pretty great."

SAMI brick donations

In 2005, while living in Spirit Lake (where I still have a home), I received a letter, asking for $100 donation for the Sami Center, on which a name for a brick would be placed. This is not unusual and I have experienced this many times while living in Phoenix.
