Broken main sends wastewater into Big Spirit Lake

A broken sewer main near Spirit Lake is responsible for untreated wastewater entering Big Spirit Lake. The Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District discovered the problem Wednesday, July 29 and reported it to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) at 3:15 p.m. Wastewater from the broken underground main was reaching the surface of the ground in a roadside ditch, then flowing through a tile line into the lake...

Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are calling for input on water quality designations for waterbodies throughout the state at a meeting scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. in Mahan Hall at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory. Okoboji junior Ray Zalabowski was awarded for his successful season on the diamond with a 2009 All-State baseball selection in Class 2A this week by the Iowa Newspaper Association. Off to college again?

I leave for college on Saturday, Aug. 15. Wait, what? Already? That can't be. Did time move that quickly? That it did. As much as I have enjoyed another summer in Okoboji, I must return to Ames to receive another year of education and life skills. I am anxious to get back to Iowa State to see all of my friends again, but at the same time I will miss the people I must leave behind at home...
