Conservation Board still scrambling for Nature Center funds (06/24/09)
The Dickinson County Conservation Board has been granted a 30-day extension to secure funds for the Nature Center's interior renovation project. The extension was granted by the Eckhart Construction, the company submitting the lowest bid on the project.

Darrel and Shirley Ramhorst of Spirit Lake will celebrate their 50th anniversary with an open house from 2-4 p.m. on June 28 at First Lutheran Church in Milford. The church is located 1/2 mile west of Perkins on Highway 86. There will be a short program at 3 p.m. 1950s attire is welcome.
Sorums celebrate 60 years (06/24/09)
Marvin and Ethel Sorum (Gregory) were united in marriage on July 3, 1949 at the First Methodist Church in Lake Park. The couple celebrated their anniversary with a reception on June 27 at the Chalstrom Beach Plantation Clubhouse hosted by their children Bruce and Diane Sorum of Bellevue, Neb., Richard and Terese Sorum of Omaha, and James and Nancy Jacobson of Omaha. Sirens 6/24 (06/24/09)
On Friday, June 19 at approximately 3:03 a.m., Spirit Lake Police were called to a disturbance in the 1300 block of Ithaca Avenue. Officers received a complaint of a male subject walking in the street yelling. Upon arrival, officers met with 38-year-old Jeremy Jay Smith of Brooklyn Park, Minn.

Some nights as I lie in bed, I see a set of six-year-old blue eyes staring up at me. They're sad eyes -- knowing eyes -- of a boy who had the weight of the world on very young eyelids.

With the exception of the last 10 years, I am a lifelong resident of the "Lakes area." Each year when I come back to visit my family, I am amazed at the changes that have taken place, many good changes and some not.

President Obama inherited an economic disaster. Decades of open-ended lines of credit for state and government have helped to cause this mess. If we were to manage our homes as our elected officials have governed, we'd be bankrupt or in jail for fraud.
