Hoar frost December 2018
Some surfaces in the Lakes Area were covered in prime examples of hoar frost at the end of 2018. Small points of ice could be seen on anything from leaves and trees to barbed wire and fence posts. The crystals appear under a specific set of circumstances, according to the National Weather Service. The government agency said objects on which the frost forms are always below freezing. The crystals themselves form through a process similar to that of dew. Moist air deposits the crystals on objects as the air itself is cooled. The water vapor changes from gas to a solid, completely skipping a liquid state as it makes contact with the surroundings.
