The Iowa Great Lakes could be flirting with a record ice-out date, but the frozen surface has at least thinned enough for the Iowa Great Lakes Rotary Club car to break through West Lake Okoboij on Thursday afternoon. The official time was 3:17 p.m. on April 26, and the date is two months later than the car's plunge in February 2017, according to contest organizers. Okoboji Underwater Recovery Specialist donated its services to place and retrieve the contest car. Members of the Arnolds Park/Okoboji Search and Rescue provided support at Arnolds Park City Beach. Organizers make sure hazardous chemicals are drained from the car before it goes out on the ice.
