The Spirit Lake Fire Department was called at about 11:20 a.m. Tuesday to a car fire in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Heavy smoke was coming from the hood of a red, two-door Monte Carlo as firefighters arrived. Officers with the Spirit Lake Police Department were already at the scene and tried to contain the fire with fire extinguishers while the fire department was en route. The car was parked near the east Home and Pharmacy entrance of Wal-Mart. Some departing customers had to wait for the area to be secured. Firefighters pried open the hood to get the fire under control. They were leaving the east side of the store's parking lot by 12:05 p.m.
