First, let's just start off by noting this is the best cartoon of Delray Bredehoeft that has ever graced the inside pages of the Spencer Daily Reporter. It's also the only cartoon of Delray Brederhoeft to grace any page of the Reporter (and likely any other paper for that matter). After reading about the possible leaks in the Spencer Family Aquatic Center, I whipped this up in an afternoon to get down to Spencer before the weekend. Sometimes the easiest play on words can be a pretty effective cartoon.
The hardest part of this one was actually Del's face. It's always a bit of a challenge to do a cartoon of a local official. People will notice if it's off, or worse, they won't recognize who it is at all, and they won't get the joke. The mouth gave me some trouble to begin, but during a quick rework, I happened to miss a bit of the bottom lip with the eraser tool, and that left me with the expression you see in the final work. It seemed accurate, and the thin line worked well. I had thought early on to include the park's distinct water slides in the background – working with the photo from the Reporter's article on the subject for reference – but nixed that in favor of time. These things need to be punctual for the joke to be good.
In the end, I finished this one up in about two to three hours.
Thanks for reading.
