By Karli Olsen — Spirit Lake High School
Another day has passed where I was expecting to be on the softball diamond. Our first game was supposed to be in about a week. Instead, the only game I am playing is the waiting game.
Waiting to see what the governor and girls union decides. Waiting to see whether or not I’ll get to slip on a Spirit Lake jersey one more time. Waiting and hoping for one more season!
I know I’m not the only one waiting for answers. Some are awaiting specific details on graduation, a “non-prom version” event, the day they will return to work, gather to honor the life of a loved one who has passed, or even to see if we will go to school this fall — or if it will be online.
As for softball, I’ve seen many posts on social media about precautions that could be taken, all of which I believe are people just sharing their thoughts, ideas and input. Potential ideas from limiting the amount of fans, having umpires and batters wear masks, sanitizing the balls, etc. Please note these are all just ideas people have thrown out on social media!
I’ve been able to hit in my backyard numerous times and my hope for the season only grows each time. I took a trip down memory lane today and went through softball pictures from the past few years. I must admit that I even listened to the radio segments from our regional final game versus Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in 2018. Two years later, it still gives me goosebumps.
As I flipped through them and listened to those clips, I realized just how much I miss my teammates, my coaches and the sport. At most, we have 13 days until we will have our answer. I await that day with great joy but also find peace knowing that God is in control and that His plan is far greater than anything I can have planned for myself.
