BY REV. DAVID NIX - ANCHOR CHURCH IN SPIRIT LAKE
This August, my wife and I went camping the first night we got there it rained all night and part of the morning. We did not have a tent or camper and we slept in our van. So by morning, all our wood was soaking wet, now most people would think "now we have to get more wood."
I took this opportunity to teach my wife how to light a fire with wet wood. A few days later I realized that not only was I teaching her how to light a fire with wet wood but also I learned a valuable lesson from God.
When you are trying to light a fire with wet wood, you need to first lay a foundation and your foundation needs to be a good one or your fire will die.
This is exactly what Jesus did when he created the universe, the first thing he did was lay down a solid foundation, you can find this in Genesis 1:1-31. The first thing he did was to create a place for everything then he created the things from stars to the grass to the animals and the bugs and then he created man. So when fixing the wet firewood to burn you need a good foundation of wood.
Then you need to get to the middle of the wood as the middle is dry wood so you cut the wood then you scrape out the dry wood till you have a nice pile of dry paper-thin kindling (kindling is really thin small pieces of wood). Just like in our lives when we turn our lives to Christ, He needs to split us open to the center of our core to start working in our lives some of it will be painful some will be pleasant, yet he needs to start in the very center where it all begins.
After you get a good pile of kindling then you start splitting off bigger pieces to lay on top of the kindling. You would stack the bigger kindling pieces to one side and over part of the kindling. As Christ does as he works in our lives he starts changing small things first then he will start on the bigger things of our lives, soon habits will change and attitudes will be different.
Now before you start the fire take the rest of the wood and lay it around the fire not to burn but to dry from the heat, the dryer pieces you will want to lay over the bigger kindling pieces so as the fire heats up it will dry it faster and catch them on fire.
Once everything is laid out you can light the kindling with a lighter or a match (I will use a paper-thin long piece of dry wood that I had cut off). In our lives, as you give yourself over to Christ, he will start a fire in your heart. He will lay things out for you to take hold of but he will not put them into your hands you have to reach for them.
As the fire burns add in pieces from around the fire and the fire will burn brightly. As the Lord works in our lives he will shine brightly through you so others can see him in our lives. When we give our lives to Christ we will be changed we will no longer be wet pieces of wood that are just laying around but we will be useful to Christ and our fellow man.
