For approximately 15 years, The Best of Second City has spent one summer evening entertaining us at the Pearson Lakes Art Center.
Signe Kim Lauridsen-Jones has consistently brought the comedy troupe from Chicago to make us laugh, mostly at life and some at ourselves. Each year a group of comedians enter the Lauridsen Performing Arts Theatre stage to frolic, make jokes and pantomime their way into our funny bones.
Six of them were here this year to perform before a full house: Terrence Carey, Sarah Dell'amico, Julia Morales, Olivia Nielsen, Chuck Norment and Griffin Wenzler. Remember those names because someday you may see one or more of them on Saturday Night Live. We have in the past.
Olivia Nielsen is one of the funniest women I have seen over the past few years. She is vital and extremely energetic. Her facial expressions are vivid and you just can't help but laugh.
I really enjoyed Terrence Carey too. He is fairly good-sized physically but that is not the only reason he dominates the stage. He is hilarious.
Julia Morales is funny too. She puts herself out there and almost begs you to like what she is doing. We did.
Griffin Wenzler is really tall compared to the rest of the troupe. He uses his physical attributes well and you know exactly what he is thinking by watching his face.
Normen and Dell'amico provided good back up in the sketches.
All six were good in the prewritten sketches. When they went into improvisational acting, you could easily see how quickly the really good ones reacted.
The Channel 11 news team sketch was quite humorous. The body language and facial reactions in the tennis match scene were very well done.
Most all of us enjoy the different "Inflatable Flo" sketches each year. This one was no exception. It was funny and Nielsen as the blow up doll was superb.
We laughed for two hours and left the art center much lighter of heart.
The Best of Second City was the best one of the past couple of years; much funnier than last year's performance by far. Will they be back next year? I don't know but will watch for the announcement of next year's lineup by late in the fall.
