Congratulations go out to Scott and Diane Benjamin on the 100th birthday of the Little Swan Lake Winery! They are holding a birthday party at the winery Saturday evening and they have invited the Beyond Blue full band to provide the musical entertainment. The Benjamins are both great musical instrumentalists but continually promote the talents of others at their winery. Have a great party!
While we all know that this summer is far from the normal we have grown fond of, I saw something the other day that made me feel more "normal" again. Tim the Sweet Corn Man was back at his selling post in Arnolds Park! He picks sweet corn daily on his farm near Graettinger and brings it to the Lakes Area. Tim has been doing that for far longer than a decade. For a few minutes, things fell normal again in the parking lot of the former Methodist church on Highway 71!
Although the Classic & Wooden Boat Show will still take place on the docks north of the amusement park Saturday, the Corvettes from the annual University of Okoboji Corvette Club Show will not be parked on Lake Street or Preservation Plaza. Due to the pandemic, those awesome cars will do a cruise-in this year. The cars will be driven around the Lakes at their own pace all day long. Corvette Club president Wayne Johnson told me there will be an open house at the Arlin Kiehl Toy Shed from 5-8 Saturday evening. To find Kiehl’s shed turn east at the south corner of the First Presbyterian Church on the south end of Spirit Lake. It is a short two miles to the shed on 165th St. The accompanying picture shows Johnson with the owner of Sampson Corvettes in Sanborn who is sponsoring the Cruise-In. I hope they all have a great time whether cruising in a boat or a corvette!
A special parade of boats will be seen at 6 o'clock Saturday evening as people will join in honoring the late Berkley Bedell. Berk was a humble, intelligent statesman who represented us in Congress with dignity and dedication. He also founded what is now Pure Fishing and did great humanitarian work in his long, active life. We salute Berk and look forward to waving to his family and friends from the shoreline if we don’t have a boat to join in the parade, which will begin at the State Pier. God bless Berk! We miss him.
If you have a reunion, family party or special event coming up this summer, let me know. Email the information to firstname.lastname@example.org or give me a call at 712-320-2850.
Have a great week and be safe this weekend. We will chat again next week!
