Thank you to all of you who contacted me to let me know that Tim the Corn Man is finally here for the rest of the summer with his delicious sweet corn and other veggies! He is back at his usual parking place in the parking lot of the former Methodist Church in Arnolds Park.
Bob and Nira Rusk of rural Dickens had quite a bash to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary last week. Most of you know Bob as the short trumpet player in The Traidmarx. He was also in the horn section of the Hall of Fame band The Dentairs. Bob and Nira’s daughter Caroline worked at this newspaper several years ago before she got married and moved to Boston. Caroline said to tell everyone in the Lakes Area hello! The band's original bass player, Tom Culver, and his wife made the trip up from Des Moines to help the Rusks celebrate. He has been battling a rare form of leukemia for several years and it was wonderful to see him looking so good now. The co-founder and original drummer, Jim Rusk, also came. He played a few songs with the band, as did his son Justin, from Sioux City, who is a great sax player. Several guest musicians came on stage at intervals and everyone, musicians and audience alike had a wonderful time. Bob and Nira spend many weekends up here in the Lakes Area when farming permits. They will need to come here to rest after all that celebrating!
The Castels are reuniting to play for the first Rock the Roof in the new Roof Garden Ballroom on Thursday, Aug. 8. Larry Jensen and Bill Carpenter we all know but the other guys live much farther away. Joining the two locals will be: Dr. Mike Rohwer of Salem, Oregon; Sue Gaskill Hydinger of Stephens Point, Wisconsin; Vicki Bartel Schultz of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; Dr. Jim Baumbach from Iowa City.
They were together when they were inducted into the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame back in 2015. These musicians are going to have so much fun playing together again and we are going to very much enjoy watching them!
A special tribute to the late John Senn will take place at that show as well. Many of the fine musicians who played with him over the years will be on hand to pay homage to the co-founder of the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association and Hall of Fame. The new Roof Garden will really be rockin' Thursday night!
