I had an opportunity to visit with Melanie Banning Campbell the other day. She told me her great-grandmother lived on Dam Road in Arnolds Park and now her children and grandchildren are enjoying it as well. That makes them a six-generation Arnolds Park family. What a wonderful legacy to pass down for the generations to come!
Hearty congratulations to Bill and Bobbi Maas of Orleans. They are celebrating their 49th wedding anniversary this week. Bill serves as the mayor of Orleans. He retired from teaching and working summers for the DNR. Now he stays out of Bobbi’s hair by conducting city business. The couple can be seen out dancing quite a bit as well. Congratulations to you both!
I really enjoyed the concert by the Headliners last week. I was so glad they dedicated the show to the late Roger Neumann. Here is a little history for you. Neumann graduated from Spencer High School and Morningside College. He went on to become an outstanding sax player, jazz composer and arranger and great educator. He taught at the Reggie Shive Jazz Camp here at Iowa Lakes for many years. Now I get to do some name-dropping for historical purposes. Roger played in the bands of Bob Crosby, Les Brown, Ray Anthony and Bill Elliott. He wrote arrangements for Count Basie, Buddy Rich and even the Beach Boys. We were so lucky to have our young people learn jazz from Neumann. He passed away on Nov. 28, 2018. Playing that concert in his honor brought back many happy memories for the majority of the audience that night. Thank you Headliners!
I saw Gary Lambert the other day. He owns Route 86 Music. He also performs with a band and a duo. He told me he was checking his calendar and counted 60 gigs from now until the end of summer. Obviously Gary is a busy husband, father, teacher and entertainer. Enjoy your summer Gary!
