The British are coming! The British are coming!!
Well, that is not exactly true. It is a band called The Brits. Many of you will recognize some of their faces. Three of the band members were in the popular Rumbles who played all over this part of the state for five decades. The Rumbles played the old Roof Garden more than any other band: 44 or 45 times (I lost count)!
When the band ceased to play a couple of years ago, three of the musicians decided a Beatles tribute band would be a fun gig. The Brits are playing a benefit Rock the Roof to raise money for the newly opened Iowa Rock 'n Roll Music Museum in Arnolds Park. The show and dance takes place on Thursday, June 13, in the Pavilion at Arnolds Park.
A silent auction and bake sale will be included in the festivities as well. With all those years of experience, The Brits will be fun to listen to that evening. They play from 6-8:30 p.m.
An alumni concert coming up in Spencer has many local connections. Spencer Performing Arts Coalition (SPARC) puts on a concert annually featuring an area musician that has gone on to bigger venues. On Thursday, June 6 Spencer High School graduate Devin van Holstejin is coming with his band called Dandelion Stompers to perform on stage at the Spencer Community Theatre. Devin has many aunts, uncles and cousins living in the Lakes Area. The Stompers were originally scheduled to perform in late January but a blizzard halted that show. Devin and his band mates are finally able to come to do that show.
Spotted Mark Broderson from Kansas City out and about the other day. He plays a mean Hammond B3 organ and enjoys performing with various groups while he hangs out on his houseboat in Smith’s Bay. Welcome back for the summer Mark!
I had a chance to visit with Gail Humphries-Mardirosian last Sunday. She is the dean of the performing arts division at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. Not only is she excited to be coming up again this summer to direct a show at OST, but had some special news as well. She recently became a grandma. Gail showed me pictures and just gushed about the newest member of her family. Congratulations Grandma Gail and I'm sure you will do a spectacular job of spoiling that precious baby!
