Bob & Karen Stewart of Johnston recently held a family reunion at the Hakes cottage on Fort Dodge Point. Their son Paul and his family were present, and all the grandkids went to Camp Foster, which has been a family tradition since 1907. The Okoboji Bible Conference was a big hit as well. The cottage has been in the family since 1948 when it was purchased by L.B. & Francis Hakes (Bob's grandparents) of Laurens. The folks in Laurens thought they were crazy, because "who would want to go sit on a musty old lake?" That is the first time I have heard of West Lake Okoboji called old and musty!!! I am so glad they had a wonderful time here!
I received an email from Tim Hoheisel at the Pearson Lakes Art Center. As the PLAC Executive Director, Tim is inviting everyone to a free Family Day at PLAC on Saturday (Aug. 15) where they are celebrating the center's 50th anniversary. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be art activities for both kids and adults, hot doges and ice cream treats. And..did I mention...it is free. Congratulations to PLAC for 50 years of serving the Lakes Area with visual and performing arts to enhance our wonderful lifestyle.
It is hard to believe the summer is winding down. It has flown by so fast. The curtain falls at the Okoboji Summer Theatre on Sunday night. The last Rock the Roof in the Roof Garden was Thursday night. One big thing we have to look forward to is the 2015 Iowa RockNRoll Hall of Fame Induction Spectacular on Labor Day weekend. Musicians with Lakes Area roots to be inducted this year are The Castels from Milford and Bob Gamble from Spirit Lake. Barbara Lancaster of Arnolds Park will receive the Spirit Award. The Out of State honoree this year is the surf music duo Jan and Dean. Jan Berry passed away in August of 2004. However, Dean Torrence will be here to receive the award and perform during the induction concert Sunday night, Sept. 6. Gamble now lives in Manassas, Virginia but will also be here to enjoy the honor to be given to him as well as performing at the concert. What a fun weekend that will be here in the Iowa Great Lakes Area.
I want to take this opportunity to thank Ruth Ann and Michael Burke, Rob Doyen and Gail Humphries Mardirosian for a very successful season at the Okoboji Summer Theatre. The four Boji Bantam children's plays were so very well done and enjoyed by people of all ages. The lineup of plays on the main stage was superb. There was something for everyone's taste this year. The entire seating for the seven shows of "Fiddler on the Roof" was sold out before opening night! I hope the previously mentioned staff can catch their collective breaths before school at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri gets into high gear. They worked so hard so that we have the opportunity to enjoy top quality, live theatrical performances all summer long. May you winter well in Columbia and we will see you next summer (and at Winter Games)!
Are you planning any wedding, anniversary, birthday celebrations or reunions? If you are having special guests, class reunions, or other celebrations and events this summer, let me know. We all enjoy knowing what is going on and who is coming to visit. My phone number is 712-320-2850 or send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks!
