It will be great to visit again this week with Sean Benz from Windom, Minnesota. I first met him when he was barely old enough to learn to drive a car. He is now a college graduate (South Dakota State University) and will be teaching music somewhere this fall. Sean sings Johnny Cash style on the stage and is a talented performer. It has been fun watching him grow up and develop his talents. He will be performing at Rock the Roof Thursday night in the Roof Garden beginning at 6 p.m. I can hardly wait!
They say there is always a first time for everything. That is true for John Senn of Spirit Lake. He is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota. He has performed on countless stages in those three states and Nebraska. He toured Canada and also appeared on a Dick Clark show that was taped in Virginia. Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock he (John Senn & Friends) will perform on the stage at the Little Swan Lake Winery near Superior for the first time ever. It is practically in his back yard! He told me the other day that he is looking forward to this new experience. I look forward to watching them.
Bonnie Fokken of Spirit Lake is following the Little League World Series preliminary rounds carefully. Her grandson Gunner is six years old and plays on a team in Georgia that won that state's tournament. They advance to the regional Little League competition in Mississippi next week. Should they win that one, they will play in the national tournament in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. What an amazing experience for such a young boy! Needless to say, Grandma Bonnie is very proud of that little boy!
Al Maser is honoring his wife Delores on her 80th birthday with the help of their friend Marilyn Maye. On Marilyn's opening night at The Inn Sunday many of the Masers' friends will be in attendance to see the New York City cabaret singer perform and celebrate Dee's birthday. I commend Al for doing up her birthday in style! She is a classy, intelligent, hard working woman who has given much back to the couple's communities of Le Mars and the Okoboji area. She deserves a special party. Happy birthday Dee!
Also happy birthday to my brother, Jerry Miller, who lives in Fairmont, Minnesota. He is a Fourth of July firecracker but my mother always refers to him as a "slow fizzler." Apparently 67 years ago on July 4, he wasn't in any apparent hurry to be born. It was obviously not the way she had intended to spend that holiday.
Mark and Connie Valens-Anderson of Spirit Lake have guests from Las Vegas. Connie's sister Irma and her husband Randy Norton are here for a week to see old friends and enjoy our area. Welcome back Irma and Randy!
I hope you all have a spectacular Fourth of July weekend with your family and friends. There is a no more fun or beautiful place to celebrate Independence Day than in the Iowa Great Lakes Region. However, we all need to pause and remember our brave forefathers who had the courage to stand up and fight for democracy and also remember all those men and women who have sacrificed to keep that freedom we too often take for granted. Be sure to make it a happy and safe weekend for you and everyone else!
If you are having special guests or celebrations and events this summer, let me know. We all like to know what is going on and who is coming to visit. My phone number is 712-320-2850 or send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks!
