I heard this week that Jack Jones is retiring as chairperson for the LifeServe Blood Drive in Milford. Thank you Jack for all you have done to save people's lives through encouraging and planning for blood donation drives. There are countless people out there indebted to you for your service. Enjoy your retirement.
Congratulations to out to Wayne Thompson and Kathleen Bittner on their upcoming nuptials. They plan to marry on Aug. 8. Wayne is a tour guide at the Okoboji Classic Cars Museum in West Okoboji and Kathleen recently retired from running Welcov Assisted Living in Spirit Lake. We all wish you many years of happiness!
As you can see by the photo, my friend Ed Hendrickson had a good time showing off his antique Corvette at Vettes in the Park over the weekend. He was dressed up in red and white to compliment his gorgeous old convertible. I was privileged to ride in it one time. That was a fun adventure I will never forget. There is something about those old, old cars (I think it is a 1954 model) that is amazing and exciting to experience.
I found out last weekend that Dean Torrence will be visiting the area over Labor Day Weekend. The famous duo of Jan and Dean made music history. Jan passed away a few years back. Dean plans to be here to accept the award and do a little singing for us as well. I am so glad that he can be here to receive his much-deserved honor!
The U of O Cycling Classic brings an old friend and great supporter of the Lakes Region here this weekend. Chuck Offenburger is known to everyone as the "Iowa Boy." He is probably one of the most famous journalists in this state and beyond. Now that his health issues have been controlled, he will be able to enjoy one of his favorite rides. Welcome back Chuck!
Robby Vee is in town too. He is performing on Friday night at Boji Bay. There were rumors circulating the other day that his famous father Bobby Vee may stop by for the show. Bobby has Alzheimers so his appearances are very rare. Hopefully he will feel well enough to enjoy a little time in the Lakes Area this weekend. He has many fans here, as does Robby.
Marilyn Maye is coming from New York for her annual Iowa Great Lakes Region visit. She has a soft spot in her heart for our editor, Russ Mitchell, so she phoned him last night to talk about her visit. Marilyn is an outstanding performer and The Inn at Okoboji is so lucky to have her on their summer event schedule. She has been a top-rated cabaret singer on the East Coast and beyond for several decades now. She can still belt out a song with the best of them. Welcome back Marilyn!
If you are having special guests or celebrations and events this summer, let me know. We all like to know what is going on and who is coming to visit. My phone number is 712-320-2850 or send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks!
