JULY 9

Posted Friday, July 10, 2009, at 12:24 PM

It really rained last night and we got over 4". It came down so hard the gutters didn't take it. Got up this am and found water in our lower level. Had to mop out of bedroom, bath and living roon. Went up to Walmart and got two more fans to dry it out. Coming along great. Borrowed ladder from next door neighbor and checked gutters, all clear. Fellow called last night and wanted to know why so many immigrants came to Canada and thn USA. One of the explanations was that the ships took lumber from Canada to Europe but didn't have too much cargo back so took on immigrants to fill and pay for the passage. My ancestors came over in about 1850 from Holland and there were 100 passengers on the sailing ship St. Lawrence. So if you add 100 people and their baggage it adds up to a great deal of weight. We were in Ireland about 2 years ago and they had a sailing ship in a museum-full size- and was alble to see how the passengers fared below deck. Lived in a box or be about 6' square and then one up above them. table in the center of the compartment. The whole family lived in that square regardless of how many. Must have been a trail. More on that later.
