Bang! Boom! POW!

When I was growing up, I used to watch old Batman reruns featuring Adam West (who is the greatest mayor EVER, for those of you that watch Family Guy). Those words appearing on the screen let you know that Batman was beating Mr. Freeze or another contender into submission and I've always associated those words with him. Recently, I've met my own superhero that reminds me of them as well.

I believe that there are a few people you will come into contact with during your lifetime that will act as mentors for you. There doesn't necessarily have to be a formal arrangement but over the course of time you gradually glean the wisdom they have to share. My superhero / mentor for the last few years has been Ruth Schwarck.

For those of you that are unfamiliar with Ruth, I'm positive you're familiar with her work. Those amazing Fourth of July fireworks we're able to enjoy each year? Yep, she's behind those (and much MUCH more).

The barge that exploded in 2003? Many people felt that was the end of fireworks as the Lakes area knew it. Not Ruth. She knew how important the Fourth is to members of our community and not only raised the money for the fireworks show the following year ($25,000), but for a new fireworks barge as well (valued at about $60,000).

On top of that, the time she puts toward making the Fourth of July memorable for all of us is purely a donation. She works tirelessly to fund the show each year, mailing over 2,800 postcards (all hand-addressed) and makes hundreds of follow-up phone calls...and for those of you that know her, Ruth doesn't take no for an answer. Very often, at least. :) This ensures that our residents and visitors have the finest show in the area.

Her never-give-up attitude has taught me to be the best that I can be. She is an institution in this area and we (especially me!) are lucky to have her. I hope everyone has an amazing Fourth of July and perhaps we'll run into one another. Be safe, be smart and HAVE FUN!!

Erin
