It Takes All Types

Posted Friday, May 8, 2009, at 11:54 AM

I would like to preface this by saying that I am not a writer. In fact, I received a 'C' in my college Writing as Critical Thinking class (but who really wants to write eight papers from varying viewpoints on how Virginia Slims corrupted the slogan 'You've Come a Long Way, Baby' by preying on the equal rights of women? Um...no thanks.) I'm sure my parents were quite proud of that one. :)

I think it takes a certain personality or expertise to be a writer. I have friends that have their own blogs: http://www.swellsnutrition.blogspot.com and http://www.meyerwings.blogspot.com to name a couple. I also like to check out http://www.katheats.com, mostly because I'm fascinated that someone can take photos of every meal they eat and then post them online with the recipes. They are all experts in their own rights--two are on their way to becoming registered dietitians and one is blogging about her baby.

Part of the reason I believe I'm not a writer is directly due to my personality. At the MACE (Mid-America Chamber Executives) Conference last week, we were lucky enough to have Pat McGill open the event and introduce everyone to their personality types with the Psycho-Geometrics test. To take the test, you pick the best sentences that describe yourself and then scratch off the box next to it, lottery-style. It was enlightening to see all the different types in the room and then be broken into groups to see how various personalities work together. I realized that it's natural for me to be impatient (because I am a Triangle) but being able to work with a very thoughtful person (a Circle, i.e. Stacy) helps us balance each other out.

It's a great tool to see how people in your office or personal life work together and how you can maximize what everyone brings to the table. I highly recommend taking advantage of this process, especially since Pat (another expert) is so close and accessible to the residents of Dickinson County. If you have any questions or would like more info, feel free to give us a call and we'll direct you where to go.

I will continue to work through my Triangle-ness and will hopefully improve my writing skills as the blog posts progress. I'm off to enjoy the afternoon and hope you'll do the same!
