2009-2010 Movie Awards Season Underway

Posted Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at 12:20 PM

Another movie awards season is underway.

Each winter, several national organizations sponsor lavish ceremonies that award the accomplishments of movies released during the previous calendar year. During winter 2009-2010, the awards ceremonies will recognize excellence in movies released during 2009.

Most of the sponsoring organizations announced the nominees for their annual awards last month; however, nominees for the most anticipated of all movie awards, the Academy Awards, a.k.a. the Oscars, a.k.a. The Big Gay Super Bowl, have yet to be announced. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announces its 2009 nominees on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at 7:30 a.m. CT, and its 82nd Annual Academy Awards will be telecast live on ABC TV on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. CT.

The first of this winter's movie awards ceremonies is this evening, Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at 8:00 p.m. CT, the 36th Annual People's Choice Awards. I don't pay much attention to the People's Choice Awards because it tends to be somewhat of a popularity contest, more about celebrity and less about arts and entertainment.

I tend to pay more attention to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) Golden Globe Awards, the Film Independent Spirit Awards and, of course, the big show -- the AMPAS Academy Awards (Oscars).

For those who might be interested, more information, including official web sites, for seven of the most well known annual movie awards ceremonies is provided in chronological order, as follows...

I'm a lifelong summer resident of Arnolds Park and the Iowa Great Lakes, born in 1964, and I moved here year-round in 2002. My parents initiated my love of arts and entertainment when they took me to the Okoboji Summer Theatre (OST) Boji Bantam Children's Theatre beginning in the late 1960s and to OST mainstage productions beginning in 1971. I support the arts in general, especially live theatre, music, dance and performance art, but my primary passion is movies. My weekly column, "Down in Front: At the Movies with F. Joseph Wilson," is published in the Dickinson County News and the Okobojian. Disclaimer 1: I'm new to blogging so the content of this "Arts & Entertainment Matters" blog is a work in progress, changing over time. For now, it covers arts and entertainment in and near the Iowa Great Lakes. Disclaimer 2: While I enjoy both performing and visual arts, I'm more active and familiar with performing arts. For outstanding coverage of visual arts, I recommend the "Creative Culture" blog by fellow DCN blogger Deidre Rosenboom. Disclaimer 3: Readers are reminded that columns and blogs are often a matter of personal opinion, taste is subjective, and subjective opinion should not be confused with objective fact.
