What Are The Words To That Song?

Posted Friday, May 8, 2009, at 12:17 PM

The other night I got together with a group of friends for dinner. This is an activity I LOVE for 2 reasons. 1.) I don't have to clean the dishes after I cook. 2.) My friends always put a smile on my face. This particular night at dinner was quite amusing. My friend requested that if I ever talk about her in a blog I refer to her as, "Hollow Fat GRRL." I believe the GRRL is supposed to be combination of a growl and the word girl. In shock, I asked her why she would ever want to be called that. Her response, "It's the words in that song I really like. You know the one!" I did not know the one. I had no idea what song she was talking about and the blank look on my face told that fact... so she started humming the song until she got to the words, "you ain't no hollow fat girl! You ain't hollow fat girl!.." I couldn't help but start laughing because the song she was singing was none other then Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" from 2004, which goes a little something like this:

All the girls stomp your feet like this.
A few times I've been around that track.
So it's not just gonna to happen like that.
Because I ain't no HOLLABACK GIRL.
I ain't no HOLLABACK GIRL.

This incident reminded me of a time I listened to a group of college girls right here in Iowa dissecting the lyrics to FloRida's song "Low." I'd like to share that with you now for your amusement. I've included the actual words of the chorus so you can follow along:

Shawty had them Apple Bottom Jeans ( Jeans)
Boots with the fur (With the fur)
The whole club was lookin at her
She hit the flo (She hit the flo)
Next thing you know
Shawty got low low low low low low low low

Them baggy sweat pants
And the Reeboks with the straps (With the straps)
She turned around and gave that big booty a smack (Ayy)
She hit the flo (She hit the flo)
Next thing you know
Shawty got low low low low low low low low

First they start humming the song. Then they start filling in the words.

Girl 1: Shorty had them apple bottom jeans, jeans
Girl 2: What are apple bottom jeans?
Girl 3: I know some ghetto people and they said apple bottom jeans are what they call it when someone has a big round butt and the shape of it looks like an apple. They call it apple bottom.
Girl 4: No, I think it's an actual brand of jeans that black people wear.
Girl 1: Where to do you buy those?
Girl 4: I don't know.
Girl 3: They told me I had an apple bottom
Girl 1: They were smoking crack!
Girl 3: What do they call her?
Girl 1: Shorty
Girl 3: Why?
Girl 2: That's what ghetto people call girls they like
Girl 3: oh
Girl 1: singing again: Boots with the fur
Girl 2: Do you think it's real fur?
Girl 1: NO! I wonder how tall the boots were with the fur?
Girl 4: I think they were like our tall uggs. midcalf.
Girl 1: singing again: The whole club looking at her. She it the floor. Next thing you know. Shorty got
pause
Girl 4: Why did you stop?
Girl 1: I don't know the rest of the words
Girl 4: low low low low low low low low low
Girl 1: oh
Girl 1: Singing again: Them baggy sweat pants
Girl 3: who wears sweat pants to a bar?
Girl 1: I would
Girl 2: you shouldn't. Don't ever do that
Girl 1: I wouldn't ever wear them to the bar.
Girl 2: you shouldn't even wear them to class. You look trashy.
Girl 1: singing again: And the reeboks with the straps
Girl 3: Do you think straps are velcro?
Girl 2: Maybe they call shoe laces straps
Girl 1: no, it's definitely velcro.
Girl 1: singing again: She turned around and gave that big booty a smack. She hit the floor. Next thing you know, Shorty got
Girl 4: low low low low low low low low low

Becky -- Wow. That is good. Similar experience with "Hollaback." Winter Follies talent show, 3 years ago, Winter Games. Four girls in the fourth grade entered "Hall of that girl." Even the judges didn't know what the song was till it started. . . . . Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, all these families in the crowd. Four 10 year old girls on stage, and they get to the part of the song where they talk about Banana's. Needless to say, measures have been taken to make sure this never happens again, but it was priceless.
