I love statistics. I get giddy about analysis and interpretation of data! Did I take stats in college? NOPE! I was a graphic design major and my advisor HIGHLY recommended I not take it. He told me design students don't have minds that work "like that." I was fine with that. For some crazy reason though, my mind does work "like that" and my current boss loves it when I put together reports with actual numbers to back up what I'm saying. I love it too because I like to know I'm right and the numbers prove that.

Unfortunately, in about 15 days I will be become a not so fun statistic. I will be unemployed. My boss broke the news to me recently that they could no longer afford to keep me employed. They gave me a 30-day notice. They thanked me for everything I've brought to the table and the efforts I've put into my job. It was a very nice way to be let go because it makes me feel good about my accomplishments and allows me to tie up loose ends and finish some projects. The harsh reality of this economy is that businesses and other organizations are forced to make some very difficult decisions about how to keep their doors open and sometimes that means decreasing the number of staff. I work for a great non-profit that brings smiles to people's faces in many different ways. I certainly do not want to be the reason that stops so if it means my employment has to end... so be it!

What am I going to do next? I don't know! The fact of the matter is I strongly believe that everything happens for a reason and we are exactly where we need to be, when we need to be there. Therefore, I am meant to move on to the next step in my career! It's a little exciting because I feel like my mind is open to almost anything! (Almost anything - after watching the first episode of "Undercover Boss" I discovered that I don't have a desire to clean port-a-potties.)

Anyway, now that I am a statistic of unemployment, you can guarantee that I've checked out all of the numbers: locally, regionally and nationally. I've checked out the jobs available here, Des Moines, Kansas City, Sioux Falls, Minneapolis and Omaha. Is the outlook good? Nope! Am I worried? Most days, no. I know everything will work out and if it doesn't, I'll just become part of the statistic of kids that move back home with mom and dad! HA! That's just to get their hearts moving a bit! I'm on a new adventure in life and am excited to discover the next place I will make my mark!

Fun Becky is Back!!!
Posted Monday, November 30, at 5:16 PM

I had the MOST WONDERFUL Thanksgiving Weekend and realized I'm not as old as just a week ago I feared I was! Something very scary happens in the process of growing up. I would call it getting "boring." That very thing has happened to me over the last couple of years. ...

Fall in Okoboji
Posted Monday, October 5, at 5:15 PM

Hello Everyone! It's been ages since my last blog. 2 months to be exact. Wouldn't you love to know what I've been up to in the last couple of months? Actually, it's not that exciting. I've been working. In the world of Iowa Rock 'n Roll things were very busy from August to the middle of September. Then I took a much needed vacation to sunny California. Now I'm back!...

Beware of the Restroom
Posted Wednesday, August 5, at 12:47 PM

This story comes from my sister's very nice boyfriend. I think very highly of him but accidently offended him slightly when I referred to him as a pasty Oompa Loompa. Shame on me! He feels he looks more like a Leo. Clearly I am a bad judge at comparing who people look like, SOOOOOOOOOO I attached a picture of an Oompa, my sister's boyfriend and a Leo. I'll let you decide who he looks like...

Sad Red Eyes...
Posted Monday, July 27, at 10:35 AM

I recently went to one of my favorite watering holes for dinner and was greeted at the door by a red eyed, mumbling woman stumbling out the door while trying to talk on her cell phone. Oh, someone just got dumped! I thought, because really, why else would you cry in a bar? Bars are like Disney Land for grown ups!...

Good Ship Guppy
Posted Saturday, July 4, at 9:48 AM

This is a story that a very bored girl working at an Okoboji Marina made up one cold January day to amuse me. Cap'n Crunch had a ship. It was called the Good Ship Guppy. I hear that Cap'n Crunch and the Gordon's fisherman used to be friends and lovers until they got into fist-fights over who had the nicest ship. ...

He's a "pee-er"
Posted Thursday, June 25, at 3:21 PM

A good friend of mine was recently in town and while catching up she casually mentioned the most random thing about her husband. He's a "pee-er" when he drinks. And then she just continued talking. "STOP!" I say, "Go back. What did you just say?"...

Girl's Weekend
Posted Sunday, June 21, at 4:51 PM

I learned that no matter how many Jell-O shots you make, it's never enough. At least for girls weekend it's not. Recently my sisters and twin cousins descended on Okoboji for girls weekend. The requests for the weekend were as follows: 2 bottle of blue raspberry vodka, one bottle of grape vodka, the fixings for bloody marys, and Jell-O shots. ...

Family
Posted Tuesday, June 9, at 2:52 PM

My family is a pretty big part of my life. I have 2 younger sisters and was told growing up that I needed to set a good example for them. I did. The only thing they learned from the example I set was that they should have more fun. They did. It didn't affect them adversely because they are now both semi-functioning adults in society. ...

Those I Avoid!
Posted Wednesday, May 27, at 1:10 PM

As I'm out and about I generally like everyone I meet. Most people are out to have fun and see friends. There are a couple individuals out there who may have other motives. The first of these individuals is Creepy McCreeperson. That's not his real name, but it a good description of the fellow who "creeps" into the bar all by himself and lingers near a group of people he does not know until one of them makes the mistake of making eye contact with him OR WORSE says hi. ...

Can rock, paper, scissors solve everything?
Posted Thursday, May 14, at 9:53 AM

I was at a bar the other day when I noticed a group of guys. A couple of them couldn't agree on something so they played rock, paper, scissors. The tall guy won. End of story. They moved on. Later they disagreed about something else and again rock, paper, scissors came out. ...

What Are The Words To That Song?
Posted Friday, May 8, at 12:17 PM

The other night I got together with a group of friends for dinner. This is an activity I LOVE for 2 reasons. 1.) I don't have to clean the dishes after I cook. 2.) My friends always put a smile on my face. This particular night at dinner was quite amusing. ...

"Tell me a story"
Posted Thursday, April 30, at 2:52 PM

At the ripe age of 26 I secured a job as a housemother in a sorority house. While the other mom's on the street were sporting platinum hair and floral muumuus, I was regularly confused as "one of the girls." The thing is, I wasn't one of them. I was an outsider. ...
