Take A Mindful TripPosted Friday, June 5, 2009, at 1:16 PM
Take A Mindful Trip.
Ever since I was a child I thought about life, time and this crazy beautiful planet we're on. At a young age I thought we were some kind of serreal cartoon drawn by our creator. I would sit there and analyze everything. From the movement of my hand, to the heat of the sunlight coming through our window, or laying my head down into the tall green grasses to see them as skyscrapers. I would also start to breathe in deeply as I approached the lake; at times commenting on the smell of the lake and how I loved it. Some would not smell it's sent, some would say it stunk like fish and some agreed with me. So I am an artist and will always see life this way. I will always wonder about its perspective, admire its beauty and search for its purpose. I am unsure how other people may go about their day. But I am sure if they took one moment out of their day to see a perspective taken for granted, they would be investing themselves into the mindfulness of an artist. Artists are communicators, storytellers. They take a moment in space and time and give you that experience through their talent. This can be done through photography, dancing, painting, acting, composing music, sculpting, etc. If they are good at communicating they get gigs, art opening, shows, and documentaries. Some people may shy away from big art gallery openings because they are intimidated by heavy vocabulary and pompous personalities. Or maybe they would not take the time to hear an original song written by an area musician, because pop culture radio numbed their interest. They could also walk by a theatre that was playing an independent film and never consider it, because they did not recognize the title or director. I would say the attendees that are walking into these opportunities, walk as if they're on a trip through the mind of the artist. Full focus can deliver them an experience of learning or seeing something new. This is when communication is a success. It inspires, educates and awakens us. So I ask you to take a moment out of your day and see it as an Artist. Take a mindful trip to another perspective of the creative industry of story telling. Don't get me wrong but the monument sign on Hwy. 71 that says "Welcome to West Lake Okoboji" is beautiful. And the craftsmanship is superb...but do you think the city could of hired a professional graphic designer to select a font that is actually readable from a distance. Designers are professionals with college degrees. Their talent and advice should of been considered by the city. You don't try to draw up your own legal contracts or write your own perscription. You go to a professional doctor or lawyer. Why should our profession be demeaned or not valued for its worth? Sometimes it pays to hire the right person for the job!
Thanks for your comment boji_design! I believe that every board or council should have one creative mind serve for their vision and insight on ideas. When it comes to visuals from fine art to information graphics it is subjective. As they say: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." If a critique is done before the project is finished the results will be more accepted. I agree that an educated professional designer will deliver preferable results.
