For close to 30 years, our family has owned a tract of farmland near Graettinger. Way back when we purchased it, we determined that except for maybe a third of it, the land should never be row cropped again. It's simply too hilly to do that. The hilly slopes gave it a very high rating in competition to get it into the Conservation Reserve Program, and when we prepared the soil we could see the lighter soil on the hills and sidehills, where runoff had taken most of the good soil and deposited it on the bottom ground.. ...
